Monday, August 28 and Tuesday, August 29:
Today we responded to the question "How can annotating a text make you a better reader?" In our journals.
Those who didn't finish annotating the article from Thursday, were given time in class today to finish.
We then read the article "Does Great Literature Make Us Better?"
We read and annotated this article. If you were absent, you will need to pick up a copy of the article when you return. We Looked for ethos, pathos, and logos, wrote 2-3 questions about the article, circled key terms, and found 2-3 words that were new and looked up their definitions.
Journal: What does the following statement mean to you?: " The future of the world is in this classroom today."
Wednesday, August 30 and Thursday, August 31:
Today we did a capitalization activity. Everyone received this capitalization reference sheet. The first two pages in the capitalization packet are the reference sheet that was handed out in class Please hold onto it, so that you can study for the capitalization test that will be coming up next week.
After we finished the capitalization activity we watched this clip to introduce A Long Walk to Water.
We read Chapters 1 and 2 and answered the response questions on this handout. The second article we annotated, "Does Great Literature Make Us Better?" is due on Tuesday, September 5th.
Friday, September 1 and Tuesday, September 5:
Today we read chapters 3 and 4 in A Long Walk to Water. We read and discussed the questions on this handout.
After we finished the reading for today, we did an activity on connotation and denotation. If you were absent please follow the instructions on this powerpoint and turn in your paper when you return.
Wednesday, September 6 and Thursday, September 7:
Journal: Choose one of the following dispositions and explain how you will apply this to your life. 1 paragraph 5-7 sentences minimum. Responsible, engaged, proactive, resilient, creative, excellent, respectful, compassionate, honest.
Today we took the pre-assessment for English 10. If you were absent, you will take this when you return.
After the pre-assessment we read chapters 5 and 6 in A Long Walk to Water. You will need to make up the reading and discussion questions when you return.
Friday, September 8 and Monday, September 11:
Journal: Set a goal for yourself. It could be anything from being on time to class, turning in homework on time, etc. (1 paragraph 5-7 sentences minimum.)
Today we read chapters 7 and 8 and answered the discussion questions. You will need to make up the reading and discussion questions when you return.
Tuesday, September 12 and Wednesday, September 13:
Today we wrote 3 sentences with capitalization errors in our journals. After silent reading we swapped sentences with a partner and fixed the errors.
Today we began working on commas. We received this handout. We then wrote an example sentence of our own on a separate sheet of paper. Skip rule #5. Make sure you write an example for direct address and contrasting expressions or to show emphasis. We will finish writing our example sentences next time. CAPITALIZATION TEST NEXT TIME 9/15!!!
Thursday, September 14 and Friday, September 15:
Today we wrote 3 sentences with capitalization errors in our journals. After silent reading we swapped sentences with a partner and fixed the errors.

After the test we traded our comma sentences with a partner and proof read them for mistakes. We turned these in afterwards.
for the remainder of class we read the article "African tribesman can talk birds into helping them find honey." We then did a Venn Diagram comparing this article to chapter 5 of a long walk to water. If you were absent you will make this up when you return.
Monday, September 18 and Tuesday, September 19:
Journals are due next time, 9/20!!!
in our journals we corrected the following sentences by placing commas where they are needed:
1. Sally brought apples peaches and apricots to the market.
2. The general store which is the smallest in the town has a limited amount of groceries.
3. Greg please come over here.
We finished our Venn Diagrams from last time. we then read a new article called "The Lost Boys." After reading the article we wrote a 1/2 page response to the following question: how do the stories in the article compare to Salva's?
After the article we completed the third page of this comma packet.
Wednesday, September 20 and Thursday, September 21:
Journals were due today. you should have 8 entries. Today we finished the first two pages in the comma packet as our starter. The comma packets were turned in today.
We had some remediation time during class today. After the remediation time we answered the before questions for chapters 9 and 10 for A Long Walk to Water. We began reading 9 and 10 and will finish next time.
Friday, September 22 and Monday, September 25:
Journal: What is a sentence fragment? Write an example.
We finished chapters 9 and 10 and turned in our discussion questions. We then read chapters 11 and 12. After reading we did a silent response by answering questions posted around the room. We then chose one of our responses to these questions and expanded our response into a paragraph using this handout.
Tuesday, September 26 and Wednesday, September 27:
Today we responded to the following in our Journals: What is taking place in your silent reading book? Who are the characters? What is the plot and setting? Book reports are due October 6!!!

Journal: imagine that we lost all electricity, water, and gas for a month without any time to prepare. Write about how your life would change and how you would survive. (1 paragraph, 5-7 sentences minimum).
Today we did an activity on Run-on sentences with this powerpoint.
After the activity we started our unit on sentence structure. We learned about simple sentences today. If you were absent you will make this up during silent reading when you return.

We had a chunk of time for remediation today. After the remediation time we continued our lesson on sentence structure. Today we finished simple sentences and started working on compound sentences. If you were absent you will make this up during silent reading when you return.

After the powerpoint activity we had a class game where everyone was given a sentence that was either parallel or not parallel. Everyone went to the side that they felt their sentence should go.
After the game we finished chapters 13 and 14 in A Long Walk to Water.

We did an article jigsaw activity. You will receive instructions on this when you return, if you were absent.

Monday, October 23 and Tuesday, October 24:
Journal: think back to the quiz last time. Which type of sentence do you need to improve on? What was difficult about this sentence? If you didn't have any to improve on, write about what helped you to remember each type of sentence.

We finished reading chapters 15 and 16 and began reading chapters 17 and 18 in a long walk to water.

Today we finished reading a Long Walk to Water. After the reading we watched two clips about Salva. Clip #1

Journal: Up until now we had only read Salva's story and hadn't hear him tell it. How did seeing the clips of Salva telling his story help bring his story to life? 1 paragraph, 5-7 sentences.

Today we wrote our thesis statements for our explanatory essay on a long walk to water. Everyone was given this handout on the requirements for the essay. The powerpoint with the instructions for the essay will be linked on the page titled A Long Walk to Water Explanatory Essay Format.
After writing our thesis statements we held a debate to introduce the play 12 Angry Men. We will finish the debates on Tuesday.

We began our lesson on logical fallacies for the remainder of class.

Today we finished our logical fallacy charts and began reading the play 12 angry men. We will be looking for examples of the fallacies within the play as we read it. We will be identifying the examples on a chart. If you were absent, you will receive this when you return.

Today we reviewed for our parallel structure test by creating study guide cards. If you were absent, view this powerpoint to review for our parallel structure test next time.

Today we finished reading the play 12 Angry Men. We finished filling out our witness and evidence charts. We completed the juror compare and contrast assignment. We then filled out the last column of the anticipation guide that we filled out at the beginning of the unit. We held a discussion on whether or not our opinions changed on the topics that were listed on the anticipation guide. We also had some remediation time.

Today we began watching the movie. During the movie we began creating a Venn Diagram comparing the movie to the play. We will finish watching the movie next time.

Today we were introduced to the literary elements within the play Julius Caesar. If you were absent, fill out the definitions for the literary elements in your packet using this powerpoint. After filling out the definition column of the literary elements chart, we began reading the play and looking for examples of these elements. We had a competition between the 6 groups in the class to see who could find the most elements. We will continue reading the play next time. Today we finished scene 3 and turned in our act 1 packets. We spent the remainder of class working on our 12 Angry Men essays.
Monday, January 22 and Tuesday, January 23:
Journal: Choose a character from Julius Caesar and decide which disposition this character could fall under. Responsible, engaged, resilient, creative, excellent, respectful, compassionate, honest. Explain why you think that this disposition applies to this character. 5-7 sentences.
Today we did a text to text connection activity where we compared Juliet's "What's In a Name" speech to Cassius' "What's In a Name" speech. If you were absent, you will receive the handout when you return.
After the speech activity, we watched Brutus' soliloquy from act 2 scene 1. If you were absent, you will read the soliloquy and then answer the following questions on a bank sheet of paper when you return:
1. Write a one paragraph summary of what you think Brutus is saying in this soliloquy.
2. Why is it important to see parts of the play, versus reading the entire thing?

Journal: What are some possible themes in Julius Caesar? Give specific places in the play where these are seen. 5-7 sentences.
Today was the last day to work on our argumentative essays during class. Those who finished early began working on the Caesar Cell Phone assignment. Those who didn't start working on this today and those who were absent, will have some time to work on this during the next class period. Friday, January 26 and Monday, January 29:
Journal: What does the word tone mean to you? 3-4 sentences.
Today we did an activity on tone. We listened to 3 music clips, and watched 4 movie trailers that had different types of tone in them. After discussing the differences in tone among the music clips and movie trailers, we went through a powerpoint on tone and how tone is used in Shakespeare's plays. We took notes from this powerpoint that you will need later on. If you were absent, you may get the notes from the powerpoint during silent reading, or from someone in the class.

Tuesday, January 30 and Wednesday, January 31:
Journal: What does a well written thesis statement contain? Why is it important to have a solid thesis? Look at your essay and make sure your thesis statement contains these parts.
Today we took the quiz for Act 1. After the quiz, we began the peer edit. If you were absent, make sure you have the rough draft of your essay with you when you return. We will finish the peer edit next time.

Instead of a journal entry today, we put semicolons where they belong in the following sentences:
1. Sally won the spelling bee Joe won second place.
2. The dogs came running outside they jumped over the fence.
3. The spelling bee began on time unfortunately, some of the contestants were late.
Today we started reading and annotating two articles on dictators. After reading and annotating, we wrote a response on how these dictators compare to Caesar. We will finish this next time.
Friday, February 9 and Monday, February 12:

Today we finished annotating the articles from last time. We started our Act 1 storyboards. If you were absent, you will receive instructions on the storyboard when you return.

Journal: Westlake HS students will graduate knowing how to be problem solvers. Discuss a real life situation you have recently experienced where you had to problem solve. 5-7 sentences.

1. Look at your semicolons and colons packets.
2. Which sentences did you struggle with the most?
3. Write a sentence of your own using the rules you struggled with.

Today we did a capitalization activity. Everyone received this capitalization reference sheet. Tuesday, January 9 and Wednesday, January 10:
Journal: On a blank sheet of paper that you can turn in (make sure it's not on the back side of another journal) tell me how your essay is coming along. What do you need further explanation on? If you feel that your essay is going well, explain to me why.
Today we were introduced to the counter claim and conclusion paragraphs of our essays. We continued working on our essays.
Thursday, January 11 and Friday, January 12:
Journal: What do you know about Shakespeare? Have you read any of his plays? Do you like or dislike his plays? Explain. 5-7 sentences.
Today we were introduced to the literary elements within the play Julius Caesar. If you were absent, fill out the definitions for the literary elements in your packet using this powerpoint. After filling out the definition column of the literary elements chart, we began reading the play and looking for examples of these elements. We had a competition between the 6 groups in the class to see who could find the most elements. We will continue reading the play next time. If you were absent, you will receive the packet that was handed out today when you return.
Tuesday, January 16 and Wednesday, January 17:

Today we continued reading Act 1 and finished scene two. We will finish scene three next time and turn in our Act 1 packets. Next time we will be finishing the rough drafts of our argumentative essays.
Thursday, January 18 and Friday, January 19:
Journal: What is your interpretation of the following quote?: "The fault dear Brutus is not in our stars, but in ourselves."
Today we finished scene 3 and turned in our act 1 packets. We spent the remainder of class working on our 12 Angry Men essays.
Monday, January 22 and Tuesday, January 23:
Journal: Choose a character from Julius Caesar and decide which disposition this character could fall under. Responsible, engaged, resilient, creative, excellent, respectful, compassionate, honest. Explain why you think that this disposition applies to this character. 5-7 sentences.
Today we did a text to text connection activity where we compared Juliet's "What's In a Name" speech to Cassius' "What's In a Name" speech. If you were absent, you will receive the handout when you return.
After the speech activity, we watched Brutus' soliloquy from act 2 scene 1. If you were absent, you will read the soliloquy and then answer the following questions on a bank sheet of paper when you return:
1. Write a one paragraph summary of what you think Brutus is saying in this soliloquy.
2. Why is it important to see parts of the play, versus reading the entire thing?
Wednesday, January 24 and Thursday, January 25:
Journal: What are some possible themes in Julius Caesar? Give specific places in the play where these are seen. 5-7 sentences.
Today was the last day to work on our argumentative essays during class. Those who finished early began working on the Caesar Cell Phone assignment. Those who didn't start working on this today and those who were absent, will have some time to work on this during the next class period. If you were absent, you will receive a copy of this when you return.
Friday, January 26 and Monday, January 29:
Journal: What does the word tone mean to you? 3-4 sentences.
Today we did an activity on tone. We listened to 3 music clips, and watched 4 movie trailers that had different types of tone in them. After discussing the differences in tone among the music clips and movie trailers, we went through a powerpoint on tone and how tone is used in Shakespeare's plays. We took notes from this powerpoint that you will need later on. If you were absent, you may get the notes from the powerpoint during silent reading, or from someone in the class.

Tuesday, January 30 and Wednesday, January 31:
Journal: What does a well written thesis statement contain? Why is it important to have a solid thesis? Look at your essay and make sure your thesis statement contains these parts.
Today we took the quiz for Act 1. After the quiz, we began the peer edit. If you were absent, make sure you have the rough draft of your essay with you when you return. We will finish the peer edit next time.
Thursday, February 1 and Friday, February 2:
Journal: In Act 1 we were introduced to the warning 'Beware the Ides of March.' What do you think this warning means? What significance does it have in the play? 3-4 sentences. Wednesday, February 7 and Thursday, February 8:
Instead of a journal entry today, we put semicolons where they belong in the following sentences:
1. Sally won the spelling bee Joe won second place.
2. The dogs came running outside they jumped over the fence.
3. The spelling bee began on time unfortunately, some of the contestants were late.
Today we started reading and annotating two articles on dictators. After reading and annotating, we wrote a response on how these dictators compare to Caesar. We will finish this next time.
Friday, February 9 and Monday, February 12:

2. Which sentences did you struggle with the most?
3. Write a sentence of your own using the rules you struggled with.

Today we finished Act 4 and began Act 5. We will finish Act 5 next time. We will be introduced to the mannequin challenge activity next time as well.

Journal: What does the word satire mean? If you don't know, look up the definition. List an example of satire that you have seen or read.
Today we began our unit on The Princess Bride. To open the unit we wrote down the definitions from this powerpoint on this handout. We then watched the Shrek clips linked below and wrote down examples of satire techniques on the same handout. Instead of doing the paragraph listed on the second page, answer this question: How are the writers trying to make Shrek into a satire?

Journal: Write your own satirical fairytale. You will need your Shrek handout to refer to the techniques. You fairytale must include at least 3 of the techniques of satire and be school appropriate. 5 sentences minimum.

Journal: Do you think people should have the right to cut out and add things to stories when they tell them, to remake them however they want, even if they are considered to be some of the greatest stories ever written? Why or why not? 5-7 sentences.
Today we had a satire contest on chapter 1. Everyone helped their group find techniques of satire in chapter 1 and recorded these on this handout. If you were absent, you will still need to find techniques of satire in chapter 1 and record them on the handout.
After the contest, we read chapters 2 and 3.

Today we finished reading chapters 2-4 in our groups. After the reading, we began watching the movie version of The Princess Bride.

Today we finished the Rapunzel activity. After the Rapunzel activity we started the Robin Hood and Princess Bride comparison activity. We will finish this next time.

-Main idea
-One inference (infer means to come to a conclusion about something based on context clues) from the story.
-Choose 2 words from the story and draw their connotations (emotions and feelings that are associated with the word) and denotations (dictionary definition of the word).
You will need to have a total of 6 pictures (visual representations) on your poster.

Journal: Today we read two articles on fairy tales. One was for, and one was against fairy tales. If you were absent, you will need to read the articles (you may pick up the articles when you return) and respond to the following prompt: Are you for or against fairy tales? Explain why you have chosen this side. 3-4 sentences.
After silent reading we held a class debate on fairy tales. If you were absent, you will need to write a 1/2 page response to the following question: If you were to participate in a debate on fairy tales, which side would you be on? Which points would you bring up to defend your side?
